Tiki Caliente 4 - Day One (Friday)

The Spy in the House of Tiki

Untitled

I pierced through the traffic riddled 210 around 3:45pm. I'd been driving since 2pm and I had just hit the 10. Once I weaved my way through Redlands, it was easy-peasy Shakey Shakey.

My inner Urban Archeologist always snaps to attention whenever a mid-century design grazes passed my line of sight. I should realize by now that all of the buildings here in Palm Springs are like that. It's still always exciting to come out of desert wasteland on the 111 to see the sharp lines of the Palm Springs Vistor Center.

As I drove through downtown, I found myself following my friend Kirby's yellow tiki dune buggy. I had a wash of a "you're in the right place" feeling. I arrived at my hotel...painlessly checked in...and went to investigate the event. And that's when the cocktails started....

First stop....visit with Marie, Jeremy and Amy at the Tonga Hut bar. Amy was kind enough to buy my a drink, which was just the ticket to keep me refreshed while waiting in line with Dr.Z at Syd's room...the first stop on my crawl.

Syd, the mayor of Tiki Ti, had whipped up a deliously refreshing ginger-based cocktail. I was sad when it was gone.

My sadness was short lived, as I met up with most (and later all) of the Ding Dong Devils and we all staggered down to the Ace Hotel for dinner and Manhattans.

When we arrived back at the ranch, the Manhattans continued, thanks to Brent and a fine bottle of rye. After a brief stop to talk politics with Ray, it was time for bed. Just as kindly as Amy greeted me with a drink when I arrived for the day, she sent me off for the evening with some lovely Mojave Oasis wear (which I am currently now wearing as I write this, here on this beautiful Saturday morning. Is it Saturday? It is Saturday...right?).

More fun later....
